75th Kohaku Uta Gassen
On the new year eve the 75th Kohaku Uta Gassen Red & White Year-End Song Festival took place in Shibuya and it was a live broadcast from NHK Hall. At the end of this graceful yearly event the White team has been titled as the winner.
The viewer rating of this event has met with a sudden fall and the rating as 32.7% which is the second lowest viewership in the history of Kohaku Uta Gassen ever after the introduction of two part format since 1989. This viewership rating has been reported by the Video Research of the Kanto region. Consecutively ten times the viewership ratings has fallen below 40%. In 2021, both the first and second part encountered this fall and the rating has been recorded as 34.3%.
There are many reasons which stand for the decline of this viewership rating. The shift of streaming opportunity from the traditional live TV broadcast to online platforms has majorly affected this viewership, particularly the younger audiences prefer the online platforms over the TV. It is observed that this staple and long-term traditional musical festival has become predictable & the audiences feel uninterested. So, they replace their entertainment with online concerts, a vast variety of social media content and many more.
Such factors are leading to the decline of most celebrated and traditional musical events like “Kohaku Uta Gassen”.
