On February 1, 2026, Batu Caves close to Kuala Lumpur, are turned into a site of religious wonder where 3.5 million followers gather to celebrate the victory of Lord Murugan in Thaipusam 2026. The three-day festival (Jan 30-Feb 1) involves a procession of a 21-foot silver chariot of the Sri Mariamman Temple, 15km to the caves. The devotees bring paal kudam (milk pots), vel kavadi (spear piercings), and magam kavadi during trance-like devotion up 272 rainbow-colored steps to Temple Cave. The air is filled with chants and drumming and free vegetarian food and rigid vegetarianism and celibacy pledges. Road blocks, KTM Komuter trains, and Gombak Setiawangsa parking facilitate entry even when there are huge masses of people. This Tamil Hindu achiever is a combination of penance, pilgrimage and cultural pride.

Batu Caves procession peaks with kavadi bearers hooked with skewers, proving faith through body piercings and milk offerings during full moon rituals.

Festival Devotion Practices

Festival devotion practices include 48-day purification, sacred baths with rosewater/honey, and yellow rooster flag hoisting signaling Murugan’s war victory.
