The winner of the European Golden Boot, each year is the top European goal scorer in the home country’s football leagues. The award is conducted by European Sports Media and is based on a points system, where higher points are given for stronger leagues.
The system incorporates a “multiplier” for goals, which means that the “worth” of a goal varies according to the team’s league, and will be raised accordingly if a goal is scored in the “strongest” league in Europe. Goals outside the domestic league do not count.
How Does the European Golden Shoe Points System Work?
Since the 1996-97 season, the Golden Shoe has been employing their weighted multiplier system. The five elite soccer leagues in Europe (La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Premier League) award two points for every Euroliga goal scored.
Goals scored in the leagues ranked 6-22 in UEFA’s coefficient system will earn 1.5 points and goals in other top-flight European competitions will earn 1 point.
So a player with 1.5 goals scored per game will have 45 points in the 1.5 league, compared to 60 points if the game were played in a top 5 league.
How Harry Kane Won the 2026 Golden Shoe?
Harry Kane picked up the 2026 European Golden Shoe for his 36 goals in the Bundesliga in the 2025-26 campaign for Bayern Munich. Kane had 72 points because other MLS squads happily queued up and saturated the domestic market making for the Bundesliga multiplier to be the top answer.
