With the trend of companies diversifying manufacturing operations from China, Southeast Asia is becoming a more appealing option. Growth of exports of electronics, foreign investments, and improved regional trade is generating new economic opportunities. In 2026, ASEAN Export Growth is on the rise, especially in Malaysia and Vietnam, as companies solidify overseas supply chains.
ASEAN Export Growth Accelerates in 2026
Malaysia exported RM52.44 billion worth of goods to ASEAN, which is 40.2% higher compared to the previous year. The MATRADE’s official trade performance report indicates that this growth was driven by electronics, machinery and equipment. The figures reflect increased regional demand and manufacturing based trade.
Why Manufacturers Are Moving Beyond China
China-plus-one is a strategy that companies are using to buffer themselves against geopolitical risk and to diversify manufacturing. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) ASEAN investment analysis estimates that in 2025, Southeast Asia received foreign investments worth $244 billion. Confidence in this industry has risen and manufacturing investment grew almost by half.
Vietnam and Malaysia Strengthen Regional Trade
The growth of electronics and industrial supply chains is helping to drive Vietnam and Malaysia. Official statistics of Vietnam–Malaysia trade data during the first nine months of 2026 indicated that the trade volume between the two nations amounted to $17.4 billion, rising 44.2% year-on-year. There is more and more support for regional manufacturing integration, through stronger commercial relationships.
Challenges Facing ASEAN’s Manufacturing Expansion
Although ASEAN is promising growth, it suffers from lack of infrastructure, lack of labour, tariff uncertainty and relying on imported components. Logistics constraints and trade restrictions are indicated in the IMF’s regional economic assessment. Sustained competitiveness will depend on improvements of transport networks, skills of the workforce and regional cooperation.
