Adequate face masks supply, no need for panic buying, says Shopee and Lazada

KUALA LUMPUR: Major e-commerce platforms in Malaysia have urged the citizens to avoid panic-buying as there is plenty enough supply of face masks ahead of the mandatory use of face masks in public places starting August 1.

Both company reported that there has been a spike of face masks demand after the government announced the compulsary wearing of it on public places and public transportation to curb the increase of positive Covid-19 cases in the country.

Shopee regional managing director Ian Ho, in an interview with Bernama, said that the company experienced 65% spike in the demand for the face masks compared to the day before the announcement was made. There’s also another 40% spike for children’s face mask recorded by the e-commerce company.

Lazada Malaysia, the leading e-commerce platform in Malaysia, also reported a jump of masks and filters purchases to around three times since last week.

Both Shopee and Lazada assured the public that they are working closely together with the manufacturing groups and ditributors as well as seelers that there is plenty of stock to go around and the people can conveniently purchase it online.

Shoppee also encouraged sellers to sell and distribute face masks that comply with the MDA requirements and those who does not comply with the local laws will be swiftly removed to ensure compliance. Both company are committed to maintaining the supply of face masks to serve the need of the country. They also encouraged the public to report any overpriced masks while shopping on its platform.
