Amazon has decided to end The Wheel of Time after only three seasons, upsetting the show’s fans. After the third season ended on April 17, the decision set off a wave of criticism online. Ironically, The Affair was praised by critics and sold well worldwide, but lack of popularity with Americans and the sky-high cost of shooting caused its early demise. Seeing as the fantasy series’ novels are beloved by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, it was once a key series for Prime Video. Since negotiations for a fourth season fell through and the comedy remained canceled, many fans have called for answers and more from the writers and actors.
Experts in the industry say economic concerns likely led to the show’s cancellation. Despite hitting top spots worldwide and rising to number one in several nations, Season 3 was not a big hit with American viewers. It was in Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals list for just three weeks, unlike past seasons. With higher costs involved in producing the show, Amazon and Sony Pictures Television looked into ways to continue, but the numbers didn’t add up. Canceling the show after three seasons was the decision Amazon made, although ratings kept getting better — from 81% in Season 1 to 97% in Season 3.
Many people on social media are outraged and disbelieving after the news and “wheel of time amazon cancelled” is a trending topic as people call for a different decision. Season 3 won praise among viewers because of its strong stories and growth in the characters and they believed the series had just started to stand out. Amazon is thought to be prepping Season 3 to be considered for Emmys, but officials have not yet revealed plans for the show on a different platform. Rafe Judkins prepared a way for the finale to give some resolution in case the series was not picked up again, however, fans are already trying to save it, much as they did for The Expanse and Lucifer.
