The discussion regarding the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the economy in the Southeast Asia will be the key topic for the upcoming ASEAN virtual summit this week.
According to Indonesia’s foreign minister Retno Marsudi, though they have not share any specific agenda as of the moment, the coronavirus handling and response of the region will surely be the top priority.
As of Friday, There are more than 123,000 cases of COVID-19 in the region and Indonesia remains the worst hit country with 43,803 cases so far. The region were being advised to stay vigilant to avoid possible second wave of the coronavirus.
Ramdhan Muhaimin, a lecturer of International Relations Department in Al-Azhar University in Jakarta, urged Asean not to be complacent to avoid becoming the new epicenter of the virus.
The foreign leaders are also expected to discuss global issues, developments in region and relations with its dialogue partners.
The ASEAN Summit could strengthen cooperation among member states to improve the economy amid the health crisis. The virtual Asean summit will be on on June 26.
