ASEAN and UAE Strengthen Ties to Advance Regional Partnership and Development

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a report that they are interested in developing and strengthening the partnership during the 3rd Meeting of the ASEAN-UAE Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee in Jakarta. The progress to be made was met according to the Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Cooperation Areas (PCA) 2024-2028 which included such key areas of activity as trade, investment, digital economy, tourism, and sustainable agriculture. The meeting reaffirmed the enhanced degree of interest that the UAE holds in South East Asia when it defines the shared desire to enhance peace, prosperity, and connectivity in the area through inclusive and progressive collaboration.

Expanding Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

The ASEAN and the UAE discussed the events in different spheres of cooperation, including maritime cooperation, peace and reconciliation, and humanitarian aid. They also researched on projects in the Initiative of ASEAN Integration (IAI) and Narrowing the Development Gap (NDG) that would enable inclusivity in the region. UAE was encouraged to be a contributor in ASEAN long-term vision, ASEAN 2045, and other strategic plans like ASEAN connectivity strategic plan (ACSP) and IAI work plan V. The key elements of the changing partnership shown by both parties were the sustainable development and the more people-to-people relations.

Charting New Avenues for Future Collaboration

Moving into the future, ASEAN and the UAE found new common ground in their collaboration, such as governance, women empowerment, social welfare and poverty eradication. They also decided to seek cooperation in the field of finance and banking, digitalization, e-commerce, and smart-city development- giving credit to the current developments in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network. During the meeting, which was also chaired by the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN representing the ASEAN Economic Community and the UAE Ambassador to Indonesia, resolved the intent by both parties to enhance the links that will result in the sustainable and inclusive regional development.
