Some of the global events which take forward with humanity become unnoticed but its purpose finds its energy itself. So, this writing is about the “First Asian Inmate Chess Championship” which took place among the inmates who were selected from various regions of Asia. This appreciative event took place by the FIDE (International Federation of Chess) who established this first ever tournament with the motto of “Chess for Freedom”.

There were 23 teams in total who were from the eight Asian countries which included India, Iran, Mongolia, UAE, and Kyrgyzstan under three categories – Open Section, Women and Young Inmates. It was a virtual chess game and the participants expressed their joy over this transformative occasion. The following are the teams and their positions at the end of this first edition.

By promoting this chess among the inmates they aim to use this game as a rehabilitative tool within the walls of prison and to foster critical thinking, patience and focus within themselves. Because these skills would be essential for their life after incarceration of the inmates of Asia who are vast, and diverse in prison populations in the world.
A question might be for some of them that this event which ended in May 2025 has begun to attract the people in June because of the powerful human-interest stories, remarkable underdog victories and strong performances which are essential for the reformation of all these Asian prisoners.
