BAFTA 2026 nominations announced with surprise snubs in major categories

The BAFTA 2026 nominations have officially been unveiled, setting the stage for a dramatic awards season. Paul Thomas Anderson has taken the lead in the race with his action-thriller One Battle After Another whose 14 nominations are on record followed by the Sinners by Ryan Coogler at 13. In the announcement that was made on January 27, Hamnet and Marty Supreme were also performing well. However, the list has sparked intense debate due to unexpected omissions in the major categories. Although the British talent has been on the spotlight especially with the Scottish indie hit I Swear nominating five times, the absence of some of the season favorites has shocked fans and critics.

While the BAFTA 2026 nominations celebrated new talent like Chase Infiniti, who earned a surprise Best Actress nod, the list was defined by its high-profile snubs. The most unexpected was the near-complete lockout of the blockbuster musical Wicked: For Good which did not even get a nomination in Best Film or Best Director regardless of its commercial success. Equally, Guillermo del Toro was not on the list of the nominations of the best director of Frankenstein, despite the fact that the movie did well in technical awards.
