BTS Suga Creates Music Therapy Center with 5 Billion Won Donation

The philanthropic activity that Suga of the BTS band has undertaken can be described as a historical one since the musician has opened an unprecedented autism treatment clinic with the assistance of his incredible donation of 5 billion won. The specialized center with the official name of the Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center is the biggest single donation ever given by an entertainer to Yonsei Medical Center.

Severance Hospital attended the grand groundbreaking of this creative facility, which was on the ground floor of Jejungwan. The center is the first learning facility to establish a specific way of treatment containing both traditional methods of treatment and the latest way of music therapy concerning children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

The entire system of treatment in the facility involves several branches of therapeutic approaches, such as behavioral intervention, speech development studies, and psychological counseling solutions. Nevertheless, the uniqueness of the center is that a form of therapeutic intervention incorporates the ideas of music therapy directly under the influence of Suga himself, who is a musician.

The project was based on the cooperation between Suga and Professor Cheon Geun-a, a prominent expert in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Severance Hospital. They teamed up after having a great debate on how important it is to generate innovative autism treatment patterns to be able to offer lasting, sustainable therapeutic conditions to children with the disorder.

The involvement of Suga was more than a monetary investment. The artist was involved in program development activities during his weekend hours in a span of 4 months between March and June. He was actively engaged in direct work and held music sessions during which he demonstrated playing the guitar and other instruments, making children acquire the skills related to their interest in rhythm recognition and emotional expressiveness.

The most outstanding project of the center, the social group program of the social group, called the “MIND“, demonstrates the innovative medical idea of Suga concerning autism treatment using musical treatment. Children who took part in the sessions showed impressive development of social skills during the musical group activities, and a great number of non-verbal learners significantly improved their emotional expression and interaction with their peers.

The success of the program is determined by its own innovative approach, in which children develop their own creativity not only by playing instruments but also by learning to act within a group of people. Initial findings have shown a great increase in the capability of the subjects to express themselves emotionally and to establish valid social relations with other children.

This charitable initiative has another meaning since it is the reaction of Suga to the personal difficulties he experienced last year. After a drink-driving event with a scooter, which caused a public outcry, the artist decided to use his period of self-reflection to benefit the community through genuine service and volunteer work.

After his time of required military duty, Suga apologized in detail about his previous actions in his life and the fact that he had failed the fans and other group members of BTS. His dedication to the autism treatment center would be concrete evidence of self-development and social responsibility.
