MANILA – Businessman Wilfredo Keng has filed another case agains Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, this time over a 2019 Twitter post where she shared the website’s news article on the businessman.

Keng is the same person who is behind the liber suit that recently convicted Ressa and former writer Reynaldo Santos Jr. on June 15.

The businessman filed his second complaint at the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office last February 13, of which the copy was released to the media on Friday.

The complaint for another libel case was due to Ressa posting a screenshot of a 2002 Philippine Star article linking Keng to the murder of a former councilor. The Philippine Star took down the article after receiving a possible legal action from the businessman’s camp.

According to Keng, while the Philippine star deleted the post, Ressa made it sure that libelous article will be read by her 350,000 followers and anybody who has internet access.

Keng also accuses Ressa of maliciously sharing false information despite the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency giving him a clean record.

On Monday, the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46 convicted Ressa and former researcher-writer Santos in the cyber libel case filed by Keng. The case was well covered on international headlines as opposition groups, human rights groups criticized the decision as part of Duterte’s move to curtail freedom of speech. Malacañang denied the accusations saying Ressa’s conviction was not politically motivated as the case were filed by a private individual.

  • Like!! Really appreciate you sharing this blog post.Really thank you! Keep writing.

  • So much have been written and reported with regards to Ressa’s side of the story which seemed like Rappler was really justifying their wrongdoings. Is it soooooo hard for them as a news agency to apologize for the damage they have caused and take down the article/s written wrongly? I do not see this as a press freedom defence anymore, it’s more of their pride and ego. So maybe this has something to do with personal gains or losses. Just saying.

  • She deserves it. You do not go around spreading fake news about innocent people and expect to be free all your life. If we Filipinos really want justice, then we shouldn’t be selective.

  • Finally some jail time! The article against the businessman was published in 2012. Rappler had already been warned that time kasi they delivered wrong and unverified information. But still they re-published it in 2014. Reporters should be more careful with their writeups and broadcasts. They should know this in the first place! Now that Ressa has been found guilty, the media is whining about oppression of Philippine press freedom? Oh come on!

  • Accuracy, brevity and clarity are the ABCs of good journalism. In Rappler CEO Maria Ressa’s case, she failed to deliver correct and fair information. Whatever her reason is, we do not know for sure. Though it makes me wonder if it has something to do with political stances and/or biases.

  • It really saddens me that there are people who actually think that this is a matter of press freedom oppression. If the media is being suppressed then why are they publishing fake news for free?

  • What Ressa did was a personal attack against an innocent businessman. Not only did she write about Keng's "connection" with CJ Corona, her Rappler also disseminated news dati saying Keng's businesses are drug-related. Kung ako nasa position nung Keng, I will also file a libel case against Ressa and Rappler especially when I'm sure that there is no truth behind what they want the public to believe in.

  • Although it is the responsibility of the journalists to seek and report the truth, we cannot always say that the news being delivered to us are 100% objective. If we really look into writing and reporting, it is possible to inject a byline’s opinion to a news report without the audiences’ knowledge.
