Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam alarmed by Laos’ third Mekong project

Laos is pushing through with the hydropower project on the Mekong River and Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam shows concern on the transboundary impact and effects on nations involved.

Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam on a special joint committee session of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) urged Laos to reasses the impact it may cause to the region.

They praised Laos submission of the 1,460MW Luang Prabang hydropower project for consultation and its cooperation in providing documents as well as openess to consider recommendations from the member countries.

Cambodia National Mekong Committee secretary-general So Sophort admitted that Cambodia might be affected with the project as the country is located in the lower Mekong.

Cambodia’s official release a statement that Laos should further identify the project’s environmental impacts as well as mitigation plans and measures. Joint committee member for Laos Chanthanet Boualapha reassures that the government is committed to addressing this problems and will continue to engage, share information, joint monitoring to ensure the project do not result to significant transboundary impact
