Cameron Highland Farmers cut off from supplying, donates vegetable to poor and elderly

KUALA LUMPUR – Vegetable farmers from Cameron Highlands are having a hard time delivering the supplies with the restrictions on traffic and market operating hours under the movement control order (MCO) that they are now donating their vegetables to poor and elderly just to salvage the food items and channelling these to the needy.

“It’s tough for us to even send our vegetables to another kampung, let alone the entire country,” Cameron Highland Farmers Association chairman Zhong Nan Feng said in a interview.

“And even if we’re giving the vegetable for free, no one dared to collect them (because of MCO)” He added.

Tonnes of fresh vegetables were being discarded by farmers at Cameron highlands as they could not be transported due to the implementation of MCO.

While the government allows transportation for food services during MCO, the farmers are still unable to deliver the perishable goods to a couple of big supermarkets.

As long as there’s supply, the vegetables will be given to the poor, elderly and people with disabilities. Farmers in Cameron Highlands supply around 30% of the needs of Malaysian consumers.
