The Philippines has 16 new cases of 2019 coronavirus disease or COVID-19, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 49, said Wednesday the Ministry of Health (DOH).

Coronavirus disease is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China’s city in Hubei province.

The International Committee on Virus Taxonomy classified SARS-CoV-2 as the novel coronavirus.

The novel coronavirus causes respiratory symptoms including fever and cough, but it can cause severe illnesses such as pneumonia, especially for older adults and people with health problems.

A family of viruses, the coronavirus has surfaces with a crown-like appearance. The viruses on their surfaces are named after spikes.
