OpenAI has released a significant update to ChatGPT, a big leap toward online shopping revolution. Starting this Monday, the new feature allows product searching by natural language queries such as “What’s a good hair dryer under ₹5,000?” with personalized, curated recommendations. Apart from that, images, ratings, and direct links to purchase are now included in the update, making shopping much easier from the chatbot interface.
This feature is available to GPT-4o users with accessibility granted across all accounts, be they Free, Plus, or Pro. On top of that, even logged-out users can enjoy it now being rolled out globally to Android users, iPhone users, and web users.

OpenAI is clear with its intention: to compete against Google in search and product discovery. Google Search is still the number one search engine; however, OpenAI is trying to get the search results to be as organic as possible without ads. For the recommendations made in ChatGPT, OpenAI uses third-party metadata such as pricing, product descriptions, and user reviews, and it clarified that it doesn’t take any affiliate commissions and that paid results will receive no preferential treatment.
OpenAI also intends to implement memory to ChatGPT for personalized shopping recommendations. But, unfortunately, this will not be rolled out in the EU due to data protection regulations. Users can expect trending kind of search suggestions—much like Google’s autocomplete.
