Xi Jinping, President of China, is scheduled to visit Macau from December 18-20 to inaugurate Sam Ho-fai as the former Portuguese colony’s leader. Macau elected former top judge, Sam, as its sixth chief executive in October. He ran as the only candidate.
Sam is set to replace former leader Ho Iat-shing. He is born and raised in mainland China, and simultaneously shares no business background, and his lifetime career has been part of the judiciary. He seeks solidarity, integrity and reform.
Sam is planning to continuously open up prospects for the practice of ‘1 country, 2 systems’. On his three-day tour, the Chinese President is also expected to inaugurate 10 top officials selected by the incoming leader on the same day.
During his last visit to Macau, Xi Jinping inaugurated Ho Iat-shing and his cabinet. It came 5 years ago. The former leader did not run for re-election due to health concerns. On Saturday, Ho expressed gratitude to the central government for its support of Macau.
You need to focus on another important thing here. Macau’s GDP reached $47 billion last year – and of course, the city’s gaming sector is still a major contributor. Gaming visitors are largely from mainland China and Hong Kong. Former leader Ho also highlighted that Macau had been seizing the opportunities from the national development, strengthening the functions of “one centre, one platform and one base”, and contributing to China’s modernisation, reported SCMP.
