Covid-19: Movement Control Order imposed from March 18 to 31, says Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has declared that Malaysia will be placed under nationwide movement control order as government is taking drastic measures in tackling Covid-19.

PM Muhyidding  said the control was made under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and the Police Act 1967. Rather than a lockdown where everything from transport to businesses come to a standstill,  the aim of this order is to minimise the movement in the nation.

There is no curfew per se, but the public is urged to stay home as public movement and gathering are being prohibited. Business premises shall be closed except for stores selling daily necessities and those providing essential services.

The prime minister also indicated that the order also means that all pre-schools, government and private schools, fully residential schools, international schools and other institutions should be closed during the same period.

“I believe that with the movement controls implemented by the government, we are able to block the transmission of the epidemic in the near future,” he added.

A total of 125 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been reported as of noon today, bringing the total in Malaysia to 553 cases.
