Mask On! COVID-19 is surging again across Asia: Authorities of Hong Kong & Singapore

A fresh wave of Covid-19 has begun to spread swiftly and rapidly across parts of Asia, particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong since this early May 2025. The given information regarding the infections states that, the infected patients in Singapore between 5-11 May has been doubled and it is recorded nearly 26,000. Also, the admissions in the hospitals are also rising significantly to 250 regularly. Health authorities have reported about the variant that this surge is caused by Omicron sub-variants KP.1 and KP.2, which are offshoots of the earlier variant. 

What are the places recording the second surge?

Following Singapore, the highest recorded cases in the Asian region is Hong Kong, rising from mid-March. The source is detected in the sewage systems and an early warning sign of widespread is also intimated across the country. A broader transmission has been signalled as the positivity of this Covid test is growing higher than expected. It has been strongly imposed by the health authorities to use masks in all public places or crowded places and people are instructed to take vaccinations if they are at the brink of the risk. 

Malaysia, China, Thailand, Indonesia and few places in India are also reporting with the rise in the records of patients who are getting infected by this new variants. 

Is the second surge fatal?

As of now, the variants KP.1, KP.2 of the COVID-19 are not considerably fatal yet they are highly contagious. But it could cause a risk of life for the people including elderly, immunocompromised and people who are affected by chronic illnesses.
