The news regarding Cyclone Vaianu has been spreading like wildfire, particularly on social media, where many have been asking whether the storm can affect the Philippines. As more than one weather system is formed on Earth, it is not hard to misinterpret the directions of storms. Nevertheless, when one considers real meteorological readings, the situation looks a lot more relaxed and optimistic.
The Philippines is undergoing normal weather conditions at this time of the year, which includes the presence of localized thunderstorms and heat-induced conditions. No official warnings indicate that Cyclone Vaianu is associated with any storm system that is developing in the area.
Cyclone Vaianu was developed in the South Pacific Ocean, miles away from Southeast Asia. It grew around island countries such as Fiji and Vanuatu and then travelled to the colder southern waters. Later on, the storm changed its path and impacted areas more likely to touch New Zealand instead of heading north to Asia.
This path confirms that the cyclone is geographically and meteorologically separate from the systems that usually influence the Philippines.
The simple answer is no. Cyclone Vaianu is not heading to the Philippines, and it is not a threat to the country. Its path has continuously led it out of the Western Pacific, which is the usual source area of Philippine typhoons.
