Disney+ has unveiled an ambitious lineup of Korean original productions for 2024, doubling down on its commitment to deliver compelling stories from the Asia-Pacific region. Among the highlights revealed during the Disney APAC Showcase in Singapore are two standout dramas: The Murky Stream and The Manipulated. Featuring top-tier talent and celebrated creatives, these titles are poised to attract audiences not just in Korea but around the globe.
Bringing to life a richly woven narrative set in Korea’s historical past, The Murky Stream is helmed by renowned director Choo Changmin, whose previous work, Masquerade, is lauded as one of Korea’s cinematic masterpieces. The series also benefits from the writing expertise of Cheon Sungil, celebrated for his gripping storytelling in Netflix’s hit zombie thriller All of Us Are Dead.
The show features a powerhouse cast, including Rowoon (The King’s Affection), Shin Yeeun (Revenant), and Park Seoham (Semantic Error), whose performances are anticipated to elevate this historical epic. While plot details remain under wraps, fans can expect an emotionally charged story filled with political intrigue, complex relationships, and struggles for power. The combination of its star-studded cast and accomplished creative team promises to make The Murky Stream a must-watch.
Ji Changwook and Doh Kyungsoo headline The Manipulated, a psychological thriller that delves into themes of betrayal and retribution. The series follows Taejung, played by Ji, a seemingly mild-mannered man whose life is upended when he is falsely imprisoned for a heinous crime. As he uncovers the truth, Taejung learns that his downfall was meticulously orchestrated by Yohan, portrayed by Doh, a mysterious figure with a dark agenda.
The show explores Taejung’s transformation as he embarks on a relentless pursuit of vengeance, determined to dismantle Yohan’s manipulative schemes. With its high-stakes drama and morally ambiguous characters, The Manipulated is set to capture viewers’ imaginations and reaffirm Disney+’s growing influence in the Korean thriller genre.
Disney+ continues to see immense success with its Korean originals, a trend that has reshaped its content strategy in the region. During the showcase, executives revealed that nine out of the top 15 best-performing international originals on the platform in 2023 were Korean series. Notably, A Shop For Killers, a high-octane action drama, was crowned the most-viewed series in the Asia-Pacific region last year, underscoring the surging global interest in Korean storytelling.
This success reflects the platform’s ability to cater to diverse audiences with localized, high-quality productions that resonate globally. The latest slate further bolsters Disney+’s reputation as a leader in delivering premium Korean content.
The newly announced titles join an impressive roster of upcoming Disney+ Korean originals. Fans can look forward to a variety of genres, including crime thrillers like Knock Off, slice-of-life dramas such as Nine Puzzles, and action-packed adventures like Tempest. Other titles in the pipeline include Light Shop, Unmasked, Hyper Knife, Low Life, and Made in Korea.
These productions feature collaborations with some of the most talented actors, writers, and directors in Korea, ensuring a blend of artistic depth and mass appeal. Each title reflects Disney+’s commitment to curating diverse and culturally rich narratives that appeal to audiences both regionally and internationally.
Carol Choi, Executive Vice President of Disney APAC Original Content Strategy, highlighted the significance of the Asia-Pacific region in the platform’s global strategy:
“Stories produced in Asia Pacific have become a staple in general entertainment consumption. They are world-class productions that resonate deeply with audiences, creating passionate fandoms worldwide. Our focus remains on curating premium, talent-driven originals that deliver best-in-class storytelling.”
The announcement underscores Disney+’s strategy of leveraging Korea’s booming entertainment industry, renowned for its ability to produce globally resonant content.
With the addition of The Murky Stream and The Manipulated, along with its robust slate of upcoming Korean titles, Disney+ is poised to strengthen its foothold in the competitive streaming market. By combining high production values, compelling narratives, and star-studded casts, the platform continues to meet the growing global demand for Korean entertainment.
As Disney+ enters 2024 with its bold new lineup, fans can expect a year filled with exceptional storytelling, cementing Korea’s status as a powerhouse in the world of entertainment.
