From Foreign Secretary to UN Envoy : Who is Enrique Manalo?

The recent buzz is about the return of Enrique Manalo as the Philippines’ Permanent Representative of the UN from the diplomat. It signifies the renewed focus on the skilled diplomacy wrapped with legacy of leadership and international experience which could help their nation to be a stronger voice on global issues and foreign affairs.

Who is Enrique Manalo?

Enrique Manalo has four decades of experience in multinational negotiations and also representing the Philippines at the United Nations as a Foreign Affairs Secretary. While being in such an esteemed position, he is known for his calm, resolve and strategic insight. His successful diplomatic career commenced in 1979 as a Special Assistant in the Department of Foreign Affairs. He represented his country by serving in various positions which includes, 

  • Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva [2003-2007]
  • Ambassador to the UK [2011-2016]
  • Undersecretary for Policy, DFA [2016-2020]
  • Secretary of Foreign Affairs [2022-2025]
  • Permanent Representative to the UN in New York [2022-2025].
  • Manalo’s deep understanding of strengthening alliances, defending maritime rights and pushing forward the climatic justices would aid their country to amplify their stand in the global discourse.
