Good governance and unity, key to defeat Covid-19 crisis

It is important for the Association of Southeast Asian Nation and its member states to boost the region’s solidarity to better respond to the crisis that the coronavirus pandemic brings to the Southeast Asian nations.

According to some speakers from ASEAN countries, it is vital for each nations to practice good governance as it is the key to an effective measure in dealing with the global pandemic.

At a webinar themed “Challenges in Governance in Our Time of a Global Pandemic: Southeast Asian Perspective”, different speaker from member states shared their knowledge on the challenges of each government as they deal with the impact brought upon by Covid-19.

Former Thailand’s Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Dr Monthip Sriratana said that the global pandemic help the Thais to identify where they can strengthen their governance to effectively fight the effect and benefits all Thai citizen.

She also urged nations to build strong social protection programme to successfully resist future outbreaks of Covid-19.

Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Myanmar were amongst the speakers of the event. The webinar drew almost 600 participant from all over the world.

Suos Yara, a member of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, shared the country’s goal to promote multilateralism and forge alliances with other nations to achieve the goal of fighting the virus.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Lingayen, Pangasinan in the Philippines Leopoldo Bataoil also shared his insight on how  the enactment of Republic Act No.11469 or The Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, has helped the Philippine government and its local governments to deal with the pandemic. The speaker collectively agree that all nations should build solidarity and work together by adopting and implementing measures based on WHO guidelines to further curb the spread of the virus.
