The center of the hectic Old Quarter of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake, is an enchantment of legend, temples, and life. It is said that Emperor Le Loi gave back a magical sword to a turtle here in 1428, and this lake was called the Lake of the Retrieved Sword. Over the scarlet Huc Bridge (VND 30k) to Ngoc Son Temple of Tran Hung Dao and the rare giant softshell turtle (last seen 2016). Turtle Tower is calmly in the middle of the lake. The most appropriate time to practice tai chi is in the early mornings, and the best evenings should be spent walking around with no cars (not a single car). Free entry; 1-2hr visit ideal.
