International Day of Education: UAE underscores commitment to educational equity

The UAE is commemorating the International Day of Education on January 24. The Gulf state has consistently positioned itself at the forefront of global efforts to offer quality education, especially in regions facing humanitarian crises.

In recent years, education has become a cornerstone of the UAE’s foreign aid. Since 2018, the nation has contributed $200 million to the Global Partnership for Education to support educational programmes in different countries across the globe until 2025.

Understanding UAE’s notable impact on global education

Since its inception in 2020, MBRGI’s Digital School has expanded rapidly, reaching more than 160,000 students across 13 countries. The platform offers content in multiple languages and has trained at least 2,500 digital teachers.

Underscoring its commitment to education equity, the UAE – through the Digital School – has launched a programme to support the continuity of education in Lebanon, benefiting tens of thousands of students in its first phase.

The UAE’s impact on global education is notable. The Gulf state has established numerous educational institutions and offered generous scholarships and grants. Emirati humanitarian organisations continue to build schools and train teachers globally.

UAE ensuring education for Palestinian and Syrian refugees

Education remains a central pillar of the UAE’s society. The Gulf nation recently celebrated Emirati Day of Education on February 28, commemorating the graduation of the first batch of teachers from the UAE University in 1982.

In terms of urgent humanitarian efforts, the UAE has consistently supported international organisations in their mission to ensure education for Palestinian refugees. The UAE has contributed at least $51.8 million to support education for Syrian refugees.
