The badminton competition in Japan Open 2025 which is the second event on the BWF World Tour calendar has now started officially at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium with worldwide focus being given to it. The Super 750-level competition has a total prize purse of US$950,000 with some of the world-ranked highest-rank shuttlers contending against each other to gather major points with the season at its most critical stages.
It is going to be held between July 15 and July 20 and is up on the heels of the Canada Open and will be a crucial tournament where players can meet and gain some access to the year-end championship tournaments. It is being played on home soil by many top sportsmen with reigning women singles champion Akane Yamaguchi.
In the men’s singles, Kunlavutt Vitidsarn, Thai ace, who is ranked the World No. 1 is the top seed. The only challenge that awaits him is a stiff one by Denmark, Anders Antonsen, China, Shi Yuqi, Indonesia, Jonatan Christie and act as the defending champion, France, Alex Lanier.
Korea An Se-young is the top seed in the women’s side. She is accompanied by some of the best players such as Wang Zhiyi, Chen Yufei and even the Japanese player Akane Yamaguchi. The new potential star Tomoka Miyazaki also graces the view of fans at her home ground.
Malaysia has a leading men’s doubles contingent, led by Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin while other Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are poised to have a deep run. Also competing are the duos of Korea, Indonesia, China and Denmark.
In women’s doubles, the China pair of Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning are the top seeds and the Japanese, Malaysian and South Korean are other threatening opponents. In the mixed doubles category, the Chinese team comprising Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping hold the number one seed position.

India has sent a strong squad to Tokyo, including top-ranked and upcoming players in multiple disciplines.
It is a crucial tournament especially to the Indian players who include PV Sindhu and Satwik-Chirag, who seek to find their form again before the BWF World Tour Finals at the end of the year.
