In a historic move, Malaysia has been the first nation to incorporate Formula One (F1) sourced data-logging technology into its national track cycling program with the aim of taking athlete performance to the next level ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The technology which was designed by UK firm Racelogic has been implemented at the National Velodrome in Nilai. Recognized for its accuracy in F1 racing, Racelogic’s VBOX technology captures real time high speed data on several performance indicators such as speed, acceleration and power output, enabling coaches and athletes to make accurate adjustments to training and tactics.
National cyclists Mohd Shah Firdaus Sharom and Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri are among the pioneers to enjoy this sophisticated system. The application of F1 technology to cycling is a major jump in sports science that makes Malaysian athletes inherit something that was unique to motorsports before.
The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) feels that this technology will provide an edge on the global scene. Through data analysis the team can improve performance, minimize injury risks and maximize overall race strategies.
This project emphasizes Malaysia’s focus on innovation in sport and its efforts towards excelling in world competitions. By being the first country to use such technology for track cycling, Malaysia is setting the trend for others to follow.
