MCA to PM Muhyiddin: Punish those in positions of power first, shameful to claim no double standard if ministers don’t comply

KUALA LUMPUR – MCA has urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to set an example and punish those in power first for violating the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

According to MCA spokesman Mike Chong Yew Chuan, he suggested that that it would be shameful to claim that there are “no double standards” when it comes to the government enforcing rules to further prevent the spread of the virus if the ministers violates it and was able to escape punishment.

Chong has urged the politician from both parties to strictly follow the government imposed SOPs to curb the spread of the Covid-19 during the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period.

He reminded everyone that no one is not susceptible to being infected and that everyone can be infected.

The MCA spokesman also pointed out that no one will be able to avoid the virus by risking their position, adding that one person can ruin it for everyone. He also pleaded that they don’t need to wait for the people to tagged them as the ‘minister cluster’, ‘politician cluster’ and other degrading names.

Chong also said that as a politician, they should strive to be a role model for the public.

Yesterday, PM Muhyiddin in a special address said that the authorities would be taking actions against those who violated the  standard operating procedures on Covid-19 and seemingly jest that as “abah” (Malay word for daddy) will start using the cane to discipline Malaysians.

Muhyiddin’s remarks drew criticism to some members of the public as well as Opposition MPs who urged him to punish first those in his cabinet if he claims that there is no double standard. The Prime Minister said that seven other ministers and six deputy ministers are currently undergoing self isolation at home after minister Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad tested positive for Covid-19 on October 5.
