The Miss Universe 2026 eligibility dispute has become a pageant crisis. Contestants from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos and Singapore may be left out of the Miss Universe competition. The fight is about who owns the franchise agreements and who can give the license between JKN Universe LLC, Miss Universe Organization entities and MU East. The pageant is set for November in Puerto Rico. The conflict has left six Southeast Asian franchises unsure.
Miss Universe 2026 Eligibility Dispute: What Happened?
A statement from the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) says that JKN Universe LLC does not recognize franchise or licensing arrangements that involve those six countries.
The affected franchises are:
- Thailand — purported 2025–2029 agreement
- Indonesia — 2026
- Vietnam — 2026
- Laos — 2026
- Malaysia — 2026
- Singapore — 2026
MUO says the arrangements were made through Miss Universe Eastern Pte. Ltd. And entities linked to Nawat Itsaragrisil. Claims those entities do not have the authority to grant or transfer rights that involve the Miss Universe brand. This means the headline that mentions Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and “three others” actually covers six countries in total.
Why Are the Franchises Being Challenged?
The dispute is really about who has the authority to issue Miss Universe national franchise rights. JKN Universe LLC says that valid licensing arrangements must exist within its recognized framework. It says agreements made outside that framework are not legally binding and therefore cannot create eligibility for the competition. The organization has also denied public claims about its corporate affairs saying some information that circulated publicly was unverified.
Thailand and Five Other Countries Reject the Eligibility Claim
The controversy has not gone unanswered.
MU East, another entity involved in the Miss Universe ownership structure issued its own statement on September 18. It says the earlier announcement was not reviewed or approved by MU East and therefore does not represent the agreed position of both owners.
MU East argues that the Hemisphere Agreement gives it authority over Miss Universe operations in 95 territories, including the ability to appoint and manage franchise partners. It maintains that the six selected delegates remain eligible and that their participation should not be affected by a disagreement between the organization’s parties.
Nawat Itsaragrisil Says Delegates Will Compete
Nawat Itsaragrisil has publicly rejected the exclusion position. Said the six contestants will travel to Puerto Rico. Thai representative Tharina Botes, crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2026 is currently the delegate, among the six countries who has already been selected according to Philstar. Malaysia and Vietnam were expected to select their representatives. The competing statements mean that Miss Universe 2026 eligibility remains disputed than finally resolved.
Miss Universe 2026 Pageant: When Is It Happening?
Despite the franchise dispute the 75th Miss Universe pageant is still scheduled to take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 24 2026 according to GMA News.
The organization has said there are currently no plans to postpone or cancel the event. The reigning Miss Universe, Mexico’s Fatima Bosch, is expected to crown her successor.
