The fire in Navotas has introduced heavy smoke to Metro Manila over a span of only days and has created the centre of a huge environmental and public health disaster in the Navotas Sanitary Landfill. The city has reported a hazy situation, strong chemical odours and poor quality of air starting April 10, 2026.
Although the fire has been declared under control by the authorities, the landfill is still flaming, and it produces harmful emissions, spreading far beyond Navotas.
The size of the Navotas landfill fire has enabled smoke to blow to surrounding urban areas, such as Quezon City and Manila. Low wind movement and entrapment heat are some weather conditions that have aggravated the spread of pollutants. This has turned the air unhealthy in capital Metro Manila, and nearby areas.
Due to the deep-rooted landfills fire, they are hard to put out. This causes an unceasing emission of smoke, despite visible flames being put out.
Landfill fires produce hazy pollution that is not normal pollution. It has harmful substances like methane, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter that is easily inhaled to the lungs.
Exposure may cause such symptoms as coughing, irritation of the throat, headaches, and difficulty breathing. In children, elderly persons, and those who have preexisting respiratory illnesses, the risks are very high.
Government officials, such as the Environmental Management Bureau, have issued warnings against going out except when necessary. In various localities the air quality has also been assessed to be unhealthy and worse still very unhealthy.
To contain the fire, the Philippine Air Force has stocked helicopters to make aerial water drops which are in the areas that are not reachable by the ground crews. This points at the gravity and complication of the scenario.
The first step to protecting your home is by reducing contact. Covering windows and doors help in avoiding the entry of contaminated air to the indoors. Indoor air quality can also be enhanced by using air purifiers, where possible.
In case going outside is inevitable, it is necessary to wear a well-fitting N95 mask. N95 masks are capable of filtering fine particles of toxic smoke as opposed to regular surgical masks.
Indoor environment safety measures are important. Creating a clean indoor environment is important when having a haze event. Do not engage in practices that will be harmful to indoor air quality like the burning of candles or cooking with a lot of smoke.
The problem of hydration is also significant in preservation of respiratory health. Consuming a lot of water may reduce the amount of irritation induced by breathing foul air.

Those who were feeling low visibility, smell of smoke and throats and eyes feeling aggravated are likely being affected by the haze. Those areas nearer to Navotas might be more affected, however, the patterns of the winds can bring pollutants far away.
It is possible to monitor the quality of air in your location and to see how bad it is and how intense such exposure can be.
The Navotas waste dump ablaze is not merely a local problem but a pervasive environmental issue with millions of people in Metro Manila being the victims. With knowledge of the risks and immediate preventive action, health impacts can be greatly diminished.
With the situation still under control, the most powerful tools to be used to be safe in this already going on crisis are the general awareness and caution.
Surgery masks are not effective in protecting against fine particles. Polluting harmful substances are filtered more by N95 masks.
Children, the old, and those with breathing or heart disorders are susceptible to health issues.
The time period is based on the speed with which the burning fire is completely put off and in case of the climatic conditions becoming better.
