A Brief Look at NFL’s Legacy
The National Football League (NFL) is a very old establishment, dating all the way back to 1920, when it was formed under the name the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The league was originally composed of ten teams representing four states, although it formally changed its name to the NFL in 1922. The NFL was able to create a national presence and proceed to dominate the sport, unlike earlier efforts to create professional football.
Of the founding teams, only two survive in the league today: the Decatur Staleys (which became the Chicago Bears) and the Racine Cardinals, which was founded in 1898, joined in 1920, and is now called the Arizona Cardinals. These franchises reflect the long history and the longstanding tradition of professional football in America, linking the past of the sport to its present excellence.
