North Korea Launches Missiles as US-South Korea Military Drills Begin

A North Korean test-fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the ocean on Monday before the beginning of annual Freedom Shield military drills between the United States and South Korea. Over the past year, North Korea conducted its fifth missile test breakpoints.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff determined North Korea launched missiles from its Hwanghae province southwestern region. Their officials stated the missiles were ballistic but declined to reveal their precise flight range. South Korea boosts its national defense measures including testing improvements while strengthening military relations with the U.S. North Korean government officials called joint exercises between South Korea and the U.S. as a “dangerous and threatening military drill” that could start fighting in the Korean area.

Military training increased due to mounting conflicts after South Korean fighter jets mistakenly hit a civilian district in Pocheon while doing preparation exercises. This caused more than 30 casualties. Gen. South Korean Air Force ChiefLee Youngsu made a public apology on Monday because a pilot set the wrong aviation coordinates during a flight. The South Korean and U.S. forces have put their joint training activities on hold in South Korea until they complete their investigation.
