KUALA LUMPUR – PAS MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh today retracted and issued an apology in the Parliament today over his controversial statement about alcohol consumption and the Bible being “distorted or altered”.
The lawmaker from PAS, who made the statement in the Dewan Rakyat last August, said he had no intention of hurting the feelings of Christians when he said that the Bible had been “distorted or altered” when it comes to the verse about drinking alcohol.
Nik Muhammad Zawawi said that he apologise if he hurts anyone. It was not his intention and all he wanted is to defend the original form of the Bible that was revealed to Jesus, without any alterations.
During the debate on the previous Parliament sitting, he claimed that the Bible was manipulated as he have done a comparison study of religion and came to the conclusion that all creeds forbid alcohol consumption, including Christianity.
He also claimed that Jesus forbade alcohol consumption before the Bible was altered and manipulated.
Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Khoo Ham corrected Nik Zawawi in August, saying that the use of wine in the Lord’s Supper or as practised in modern times in a symbolic manner, the Holy Communion – where the follower partake the consumption the bread and wine. Dr Kevin Yii (PH-Bandar Kuching) has requested the speaker for an update on the issue after Nik Zawawi had initially refused to issue an apology and withdraw his remarks.
