The Philippine Navy (PN) has recently declared an extension of its partnership with the Italian Navy prioritizing the strengthening of its surface, air and electronic warfare capabilities. This move indicates that the PN is determined to enhance its multi domain warfare capability over and above the already heightened anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability.
PN public affairs spokesperson Capt. John Percie Alcos stressed that while the development of ASW capability is a top priority, the Navy will also focus on improving its capability in anti-surface, anti-air and electronic warfare. This upscaling is important for boosting the overall operating efficiency of the Philippine Navy.
Italy, which is among the world’s premier naval forces, has been an asset partner of the PN for a long time. Alcos said that continuous engagement with the Italian Navy would allow Filipino naval officers to acquire necessary knowledge, skills and systems in order to operate effectively in different maritime activities.
On 17 March, the PN received important Italian authorities such as Navy Director for Personnel Employment and Italian Ambassador to the Philippines Davide Giglio, at the headquarters of the Navy in Manila. During their trip, PN head Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta underscored mutual commitments towards the deepening of defense cooperation especially in shipbuilding, modernization and bilateral exercises.
This cooperation is designed to enhance interoperability, technological progress and regional security, consistent with the PN’s modernization program and strategic objectives.
