The American singer and producer Benny Blanco, who is dating pop star Selena Gomez, sparked outrage among Filipinos after he posted a video on his Instagram story where he criticized the popular fast-food chain Jollibee.
In the video, Blanco can be seen trying out various Jollibee menu items, such as the Chickenjoy, the Jolly Spaghetti, and the Peach Mango Pie. However, instead of enjoying the food, he made disparaging remarks about it, such as “This is the worst thing I’ve ever eaten”, “This tastes like garbage”, and “This is an insult to spaghetti”.
He also threw away the food in a trash bin and said that he would rather eat dog food than Jollibee. He ended the video by saying “Sorry, Philippines, you guys have terrible taste”.
The video quickly went viral on social media, where many Filipinos expressed their anger and disappointment at Blanco’s disrespectful behavior. Some of them called him out for being rude, ignorant, and insensitive to Filipino culture and cuisine. Others defended Jollibee and praised it for being a source of pride and joy for many Filipinos around the world.
Some of the comments from Filipinos on Twitter are:
– “Benny Blanco is cancelled. How dare he insult Jollibee, the national treasure of the Philippines. He has no taste and no manners. Selena Gomez, dump him ASAP.”
– “Jollibee is not just a fast-food chain, it’s a part of our identity as Filipinos. It reminds us of home, family, and happiness. Benny Blanco has no right to judge something he doesn’t understand.”
– “I don’t care if Benny Blanco is a famous singer or Selena Gomez’s boyfriend. He is a jerk and a bully. He should apologize to Jollibee and to the Filipino people for his offensive video.”
Jollibee, which has over 1,200 branches in the Philippines and 300 branches overseas, issued a statement in response to the controversy. The statement read:
“We are saddened by the video posted by Benny Blanco, where he showed disrespect to our food and our brand. We respect everyone’s preferences and opinions, but we also expect the same respect from others. Jollibee is a Filipino icon that has brought joy and comfort to millions of customers in the Philippines and abroad. We hope that Mr. Blanco will realize his mistake and learn to appreciate the diversity and richness of other cultures and cuisines.”
Selena Gomez, who has been dating Blanco since late 2023, has not yet commented on the issue. However, some of her fans have urged her to distance herself from Blanco and to support Jollibee instead. Some of them even suggested that she should try Jollibee herself and share her experience with her followers.
