It’s been a wild stretch of weather lately across the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan. Nonstop storms, heavy rain, and strong winds have swept through, disrupting millions of lives. From tropical depressions brewing out in the Pacific to monsoon surges slamming Southeast Asia, officials everywhere are telling people to stay sharp and keep an eye on updates. Here’s what’s happening on the ground.
The Philippines is getting hammered by rain—thanks to the Northeast Monsoon teaming up with a low-pressure system. Orange and red rainfall warnings are up in places like Eastern Visayas, Bicol, and Northern Mindanao, which basically means serious flooding and landslides could hit at any moment.
PAGASA, the country’s weather bureau, says localised thunderstorms are making things worse. Towns in Samar and Leyte have already seen knee-to-waist-deep floods, so local officials opened evacuation centres and moved people to safer ground.
Thailand’s monsoon season is in full swing, especially in the north and central regions. The weather service (TMD) has put out flood and flash-flood warnings for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Sawan, and even some parts of Bangkok.
Bangkok is struggling with waterlogged streets—heavy rain and high tides along the Chao Phraya River are making things messy. City crews set up extra pumps and warned commuters to expect long traffic jams.
Up north, districts along the Ping and Wang Rivers are on high alert as the water keeps rising. People living near hills are moving out for now to avoid landslides.
Tourist hotspots like Chiang Mai’s old city, Ayutthaya’s temples, and parts of Phuket are urging travellers to check the weather before heading out. Big attractions are still open, but outdoor adventures like hiking, rafting, and island tours are on pause.
Japan’s weather agency (JMA) has put out warnings for strong winds, pounding rain, and huge waves as a tropical storm skirts the country’s east coast. Shizuoka, Chiba, and the Kanto region—including Tokyo—are taking the brunt.
People living by the shore have been told to secure anything that could blow away and to stay off the beaches, where the waves are dangerously high.
Whether you live in these countries or you’re just visiting, staying alert is everything right now. A few quick tips:
These severe weather warnings are a sharp reminder of just how unpredictable this time of year can be. Officials are working hard to keep people safe, but staying tuned in and ready to act is up to each of us. With weather patterns constantly shifting, reliable updates aren’t just helpful—they’re a must for anyone in the region right now.
