To maintain a long-term economic growth and the establishment of quality employment in the face of global uncertainties such as increasing protectionism, disruption of technology and evolving trade patterns, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong unveiled a series of seven strategic priorities in Singapore on January 29, 2026. These were done in response to the Economic Strategy Review (ESR) committees which were to assist Singapore to adjust to an entirely new global environment, and assist businesses and workers to adapt to the changes in the structure. It is based on the strategies of empowering the competitiveness of the city-state, leveraging the power of innovation (including artificial intelligence, or AI), and calling upon companies to make calculated risks in foreign markets to find opportunities and reimburse the domestic economy with benefits.
Strategic Steps for Sustainable Progress
1. Strengthening global leadership — Make manufacturing and modern services more advanced by investing in Singapore via automation, AI, sustainability and national research.
2. Expanding growth frontiers — Invest in new areas such as quantum computing, decarbonisation and space technologies and foster ambitious start-ups to grow throughout the world.
3. Accelerating AI adoption — Singapore a hub of AI creation and implementation, which increases productivity and innovation in sectors.
4. Supporting globalisation and risk-taking for firms — Assistance to local corporations internationalise and take risks in foreign businesses in order to generate earnings and avoid jobs of low values.
5. Broaden range of quality jobs — Make sure job creation is not exclusive to tech jobs by diversifying to non-tech sectors.
6. Lifelong learning initiatives — reform skills and training systems, to create agile careers that engage in continuous learning.
7. Helping businesses manage transitions — Support firms to change, innovate and pivot during economic changes.
