SINGAPORE – The Ministry of Health late on Thursday record 728 new cases of COVID-19 as Singapore battles a second wave of infections.

The 62 per cent jump from the previous daily high were linked to packed dormitories housing foreign workers, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4,427 including 10 deaths.

“The number of new cases amongst Work Permit holders residing in dormitories has increased significantly, in line with our continued efforts to actively test and isolate the infected workers,” the ministry said in a statement.

There are currently 200,000 workers from all over South Asia  live in 43 dormitories all over the country.

The number of new cases among work permit holders residing in dormitories has increased due to continous efforts to actively test and isolate the infected workers.

For those residents who live outside the dormitories, the number of new cases has increased from 9 per day to 15 new cases per day. The government has made efforts to move thousands living in the dormitories to other accommodation to lessen the chances of infection while also providing  meals and ramped-up cleaning services of various facilities.
