Oh Il-nam, the unidentified villain of season 1 who adds curiosity and charm by looking like a fragile, lovable old man with a brain tumor. Audiences were mourning for his fake death but the shocking twist of him being the mastermind behind all these crazy acts, redefines all his actions and the dialogues which he uttered every time to Gi-hun. The charming six feet tall man, the recruiter who works like a messenger to the organisers of this game. Portrayed by the acclaimed South Korean actor Gong Yoo. Though he appears only in the few minutes in both the seasons his impactful performance as a man who lures the desperate individuals into the squid game is the peak of his acting. Like the other leading roles his character is also portrayed with a variation in the character arc. He represents the system of this modern world that shows how the vulnerables are becoming the victims. The manipulative shade of recruiter with devil in one eye and the soul of the individual with a helpless life that ends tragically.
Front Man, the superior of all the killers in the game and the elder of the cop Hwang appears lesser in season 1 but he enters in the second season as a cold and authoritative figure among the other players. He is proved as the forerunner of the game through his stoic presence, commanding voice, his double role which is nothing but his own characteristics, resonating the themes of power, betrayal and survival.
A former crypto YouTuber joins the game in the season 2 with the aim of solving his problem to settle down the money of debt caused by the financial scams of his. He looked arrogant, self-centered and an opportunistic person initially but his grip over the money and the faded feelings over his ex-lover begins to refurbish when he sees her as one of the contestants. Lee is a fascinating character with surprising layers like moments of remorse, protectiveness for his love, refusing to follow the path of cruelty brings the love towards his character within the audiences. Kim brings the chilling and seat edge moments whenever she steps forward to play for the game. She is one of the profound reasons who adds an emotional weight to episodes and scenes she appears in. Since, the series doesn’t follow the pattern of an usual survival thriller, it squeezes the hope of the fans when the players divide into two groups and fight in the middle of the night brutally. It gave the moment that there was a possibility of death but she survived smartly by listening to the words of the experts like Gi-hun, and Front Man. Also, Kim is emerging as an anchor to Lee’s survival in the game and she begins to throw her words at him for his safety from the chaos that takes place at the climax of the season 2. Nothing is stronger than a mother’s love and Jang Geum’s character justifies it. Jang lasts with protective energy that shines with quick wit and moral clarity. Her nurturing nature pulls the other players with love and she even defends them in a chaotic place where the ray of hope and empathy is completely killed within themselves. Her humor, warmth, grit and the maternal instinct makes her shine like a superpower among the 456 players.
Jung Bae, Gi-hun’s old acquaintance from the previous season, re-emerges in Season 2 with deeper emotional depth. A working-class man torn away by debt who is relatable and grounded to the audiences. He struggles between loyalty to friend Gi-hun and the crushing pressure to survive but still he always backs his long term friendship at the end. Throughout the games, he continues to showcase quiet bravery, and make hard choices with dignity. His evolving friendship with Gi-hun reintroduces themes of trust and shared history. His humble resilience and the moral center make him one of the most human characters in the story.
Hyun-Ju, a transgender former soldier from Season 2, is one of the show’s most empowering new characters. She joins the game to afford her gender-affirming surgery, where she encounters both vulnerability and unmatched strength while crossing every hurdle of squid game.
