Student’s enrollment: Parents will have the final say, says DepEd

MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) will let the parents decide and respect those who are against enrolling their children for the upcoming school year amid the threats of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said yesterday the next school year would be voluntary due to the concerns of the coronavirus disease and they would just give the parents as much information as possible so they will be in better position to decide.

Department of Education (DepEd) is also open for options that would allow the school year to proceed without the physically requiring the students to go to school. These alternatives involved using printed modules, online classes and content delivery such as internet, tv and radio.

Briones also said that DepEd’s position is not in conflict with the statement of the President, where he prefers to have a vaccine first before allowing classes to resume saying the president is only pertaining to the physical or face-to-face handling of classes. DepEd scheduled the opening of School Year 2020 to 2021 on August, but DepEd said there would be “no face-to-face classes until safe” and that schools may reopen but under other alternative non physical teaching modes.
