The Thai Department of Disease Control has reported that Thailand recorded over 53,500 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths within the last week. Because there are more cases, local officials have begun taking steps such as shifting schools to online classes. Authorities are watching how the disease advances, affecting mainly children and the elderly and are calling for increased awareness. Bangkok remains the province with the highest number of cases, helping raise the national count.
Covid-19 Surge Affects Key Age Groups and Major Provinces
Most patients, 50,736, went to doctors’ offices for outpatient treatment, while more than twice as many—2,827—needed hospital treatment. Those under 39 years made up the largest number of cases, with 10,740 individuals in the 30–39 group and another 9,527 in the 20–29 group. Both those over 60 years old (8,107) and those under 4 years old (4,117) were heavily affected by the virus.
Now, Bangkok is reporting 9,539 cases of Covid-19. Provinces with high infection rates in addition to Bangkok are Chon Buri, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and Rayong. When Samut Prakan saw an increase, Ratwinit Bangkaeo School switched to online classes for May 26–28 to help stop the virus.
Cumulative Cases Near 190,000; Authorities Urge Public Caution
Thailand’s accumulated Covid-19 cases are increasing by the day, currently surpassing the last reported number of 49,065 between May 11 and 17. January 1 through May 26 of 2025 saw the country report 186,955 cases and 46 deaths. The Department of Disease Control is closely watching the situation, especially because of highly contagious variants like Omicron XEC.
Authorities are telling everyone to exercise precaution, keep away from crowded spots and follow good hygiene practices, since the outbreak is not declining at present.
