Typhoon Goring intensifies; Signal No. 3 raised for Cagayan

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services agency of the Philippines, said that typhoon “Goring” has intensified into a severe tropical storm, which may cause landslides.

Signal No. 3 has been raised for the first time over Santa Ana in Cagayan and Divilacan and Palanan in Isabela because of the typhoon. Earlier, Signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes, an administratively part of the Cagayan Valley region.

Typhoon Goring gains momentum

Typhoon Goring gained momentum on Saturday morning. In a briefing at 11 am on Saturday, PAGASA revealed that the typhoon’s maximum sustained winds increased rapidly. Reportedly, Typhoon Goring can become a super typhoon on Monday. 

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, the typhoon was spotted in Aparri, the municipality in the province of Cagayan, Philippines, on Saturday. It was moving south southwest at 10 km/h.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in a statement, “Goring is forecast to steadily strengthen and may attain its maximum strength by Monday, potentially becoming a super typhoon.”

According to PAGASA reports, the typhoon can bring rains over Aurora, a province in the eastern part of Central Luzon region; Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Bicol Region, encompassing the southern part of Luzon Island.

The state-run weather agency said that Storm-force winds can cause moderate to significant threat to life in Santa Ana, Divilacan, and Palanan.

The wind can cause minor to moderate threats to life in the eastern part of Isabela and Cagayan. It can also affect the northern part of Aurora.

As Signal No. 1 is raised for Babuyan Islands, central part of Aurora, eastern part of Nueva Vizcaya, eastern part of Ifugao, Quirino, Kalinga, and eastern part of Mountain Province, the strong winds can cause only minimal to minor threat to life.
