The most holy day in the Buddhist calendar is called Vesak Day or in Thai Visakha Bucha Day. It celebrates three great occasions in the life of the Buddha-his birth, enlightenment and passing-all of which it is believed happened on the same day.

Tourists are required to dress in such a way that they cover the knees and shoulders. Light coloured and loose clothes that are also light in weight are suggested as these are a sign of both respect and comfort in the hot climatic conditions.
Take off shoes should never be taken into temple halls or sacred spots. It is an indicator of respect in Thai culture.
Do not touch either monks or Buddha statues. Honoring passing monks, a slight bow is regarded as polite.
