Vietnam Surges as Southeast Asia’s Tourism Hotspot

Vietnam becomes the rising star for that tourism scene in the annals of Southeast Asia; it surpasses its regional competitors quietly but powerfully. Thailand has been popular for ages as a destination for travel in the region, recently boosted by being featured in the Season 3 stop of The White Lotus, but Vietnam is also on its way to becoming possibly the underdog story of 2024. Vietnam has just snatched the title of the third most visited country in Southeast Asia, having recorded 17.5 million visits by international visitors this year, overtaking Singapore while trailing only behind Thailand and Malaysia.

Vietnam is now hot with several factors causing its revival in tourism.

1. More Access to Travel

First, the new country is the most improbable area one could ever reach: In 2021, it opened the first nonstop commercial flight between the United States and Vietnam, using the route of San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City. There is more: Vietnam also introduced a new electronic visa this 2023, allowing its visitors to stay for up to 90 days—thrice longer than the previous time—and rolled out visa-free entry to several countries like France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and South Korea, with more countries to come this year.

2. Luxury Hospitality Boom

Vietnam is making waves in the luxury travel industry. Prestigious international hotel brands have opened doors like Regent Phu Quoc, Capella Hanoi, or JW Marriott Hotel & Suites Saigon, with more coming to the country. The Luxury Collection, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and Park Hyatt are building new resorts in the country, which means that Vietnam is becoming more and more appealing as a new experience destination for affluent travelers.

3. Destination Weddings and Elite Travelers

As per Mike Nguyen, founder of Ansova Travel, a luxury travel boutique in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, recorded 25% more in international bookings in 2024 compared to pre-pandemic numbers. Ultra-high-end customers, especially from the United States and India, are traveling to Vietnam for vacations and destination weddings. Places like Phu Quoc and Ha Long Bay are fast becoming destinations for

High spenders from China are increasingly keen to visit Vietnam. Over the past few years, perturbations in Chinese tourist activities in Thailand have affected the flow of Chinese tourists to Vietnam, where many feel it is much safer. The kidnapping of famous Chinese actor Wang Xing in Bangkok was widely publicized and greatly influenced Chinese tourists in their travel choices.

4. Growing Ambition

From many perspectives, Vietnam’s tourism aspirations seem to be growing without any sign of slowing down. It is expected that the country will set another record of internal visitation by late 2025; towards this end, Vietnam will have attracted nearly 23 million international arrivals. Completion of Long Thanh International Airport near Ho Chi Minh City in 2025 will, in turn, expand tourism infrastructure in Vietnam with an increased capacity of 25 million visitors. Such ambitious plans are leading Vietnam to look forward to overtaking Malaysia, with barely Thailand remaining as its top rival in Southeast Asia for being the most-visited destination.

In essence, with a potent fusion of cultural appeal, modern luxury, and stunning nature, Vietnam is asserting itself on the world tourism scene. It is no wonder that people are flocking there in numbers largely unprecedented—be it for a beach lull, a spicy culinary journey, or an outlandishly luxurious retreat away from prying eyes. For bona fide sophistication in Southeast Asia, head to Vietnam.
