Will Hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Help Pakistan’s Economy and Tourism
Hosting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 presents Pakistan with a huge opportunity to boost its economy and to restore its tourism sector. This will mark the first major multinational cricket event hosted in nearly three decades by Pakistan. With this winsome event, things may just turn around for the country in its standing amongst the nations.
Historically, Pakistan has struggled with inflation, trade deficits and heavy external debt. Political instability and security concerns further inhibited foreign investment and tourism into Pakistan.
It is in view of the extent to which the Champions Trophy excites cricket enthusiasts all around the world and increases expenditure in hospitality, travel and retail, which in turn can infuse life into job creation and improve local businesses. Apart from this, global media coverage will give Pakistan an opportunity to showcase its rich cultural heritage and the burgeoning security environment which might alter long-standing perceptions.
However, challenges remain on the horizon. The Pakistan Cricket Board has been under severe funding pressure as the costs for stadium renovations shot up from initial estimates. And with continued geopolitical tensions leading to decisions such as India opting to play all its matches in Dubai over security fears, this could affect its success altogether.
Thus, a successful event can in turn help to pave the way for future international engagements that can continue to benefit Pakistan economically.
“The return of global cricket is not just about hosting matches. It is about restoring pride, igniting national passion and giving back to the millions who have stood by Pakistan cricket,” said cricket board chairman Mohsin Naqvi who acts as Pakistan’s interior minister and security chief.
