Kuwait and Indonesia are interested in continuing to deepen their historic bilateral engagement especially in areas of rural development, energy, trade and investment, and skilled employment and connectivity. The relationship is based on diplomatic engagement that had been initiated in 1968 and echoes the development drive of President Prabowo Subianto which is closely enriched by the financial and energy potential of Kuwait.
Rural Development and Village Infrastructure
Indonesia and Kuwait have joined the programs that expand the capabilities of rural communities, possibly through funding for facilities including places of worship, schools, health facilities and local economic infrastructure.
Cooperation can also boost a village’s enterprises and export-oriented cooperatives. The support for the local fishers and village cooperatives will likely bring additional employment and help the rural communities’s capacity to enter domestic as well as domestic and international markets.
Energy Partnership Remains a Key Pillar
Energy remains an integral element of economy-to-economy relations between the two countries. Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company is still participating in upstream projects in Indonesia, one of which is in the Natuna Sea and other areas of East Kalimantan.
Both nations are also about to convene the first-ever Indonesia-Kuwait Energy Forum, where opportunities for expanded cooperation in the oil and gas and refineries and clean energy sectors may be explored. The forum is likely to be a forum for exploring new investment opportunities for companies and officials alike.
Trade and Investment Opportunities
Bilateral trade turnover has reached over USD 606 million and both governments are keen to see a robust expansion in trade activity. Indonesia and Kuwait are also holding talks on investment opportunities in non-oil industries, including real estate, apart from the energy category.
Encouraging greater market access and increasing opportunities for investment between Indonesia and ‘Gulf economies’ (including Kuwait) as well as expanding economic ties between Indonesia and the members of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation group, through the proposed Indonesia-GCC free trade agreement, would further enhance economic ties.
Skilled Workers and Direct Connectivity
The relationship now includes more cooperation between the labour sector. Skilled Indonesian workers in industries like healthcare, hospitality and engineering are finding their opportunities to expand in Kuwait, which could open up even more job opportunities for them in the country.
Plans to launch direct flights between Kuwait City and Jakarta can help support business and tourism visits and people-to-people ties. Better integration would allow the establishment of more direct business, investment and tourist relations between the two countries.
