The death of King Harald V at the age of 89 ends his reign on the Norwegian throne for over 30 years. Harald had been in hospital this month and died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6.35am on Friday, August 28, according to the Royal Palace.
The present monarch, Harald, who ascended to the throne in 1991, was the oldest of the European monarchs, and was seen as a popular and modernizing monarch. His rule was characterized by a sense of national unity, openness and public service. Moreover he is well remembered for his marriage to commoner Sonja Haraldsen, in 1968.
His death has left him with an immediate successor. Crown Prince Haakon, 53, will automatically become King Haakon VIII, succeeding his father as Norway’s king. When Harald did not have the strength to undertake his constitutional role due to ill health, Haakon had served as the acting regent many times.
Today, Norway’s entire population has been plunged into mourning after news of the announcement. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed condolences over the country’s loss, and thanked Harald for his long life for the nation. The Norwegian Royal Palace has reduced its flag and the people were gathered to leave flowers and pay respects.
During his later years, several health issues plagued him, such as infections and heart conditions, and he had been admitted to hospital since August 17. He tried, and tried, and tried and yet he didn’t give up. His demise now opens a new chapter in the life of Norway’s constitutional monarchy of King Haakon VIII.
