Indonesia has launched an experimental atmospheric-modification operation to tackle toxic smoke from widespread forest and peatland fires. The trial of the Indonesia Dry Ice Haze is intended to enhance visibility, and reduce ground-level smoke. As pollution continues to spread across Southeast Asia, authorities are looking at unconventional technology, while firefighting efforts continue.
Indonesia Dry Ice Haze Trial Begins in South Sumatra
On October 15, 2026, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) of the Republic of Indonesia started testing dry ice in Palembang, South Sumatra. The Cessna Caravan aircraft made two flights, dropping around 1,600 kilograms of dry ice, ANTARA News reported. The surgery will be ongoing until Oct. 18.
How Dry Ice Technology Helps Disperse Toxic Smoke
The experiment involves using small carbon dioxide pellets to break open the temperature inversion layer which causes polluted air to remain close to the ground. A difference from conventional cloud seeding is that it does not need rain clouds. The hope is that cooling the air will help the smoke to lift and dissipate, says Channel NewsAsia.
Early Visibility Results and Regional Haze Crisis
After the operation, the visibility at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport near Palembang was raised from around 650 metres to 2,800 metres, BNPB said. The broader impact of the experiment is yet to be determined. Singapore, Malaysia and Timor-Leste have also been impacted by wildfire smoke, which has resulted in health hazards, school closures, and transportation disruptions.
Can Indonesia’s Dry Ice Experiment Offer Lasting Relief?
The trial will be reviewed before deployment of the same in other provinces that are being affected by fire. The dispersion of smoke does not extinguish the fires or remove pollutants, experts warn. Long-term solutions must include improved fire prevention and peatland protection and enforcement of illegal burning, along with regional cooperation through the ASEAN haze-management programs.
FAQs
What is Indonesia’s dry ice haze experiment?
It involves releasing solid carbon dioxide pellets from aircraft to disrupt atmospheric conditions that trap wildfire smoke.
Where is Indonesia testing dry ice technology?
The initial operation is taking place around Palembang in South Sumatra.
Has the dry ice trial successfully eliminated haze?
No. Authorities reported improved local visibility, but the technique’s overall effectiveness is still being assessed.
