Russia has turned down Ukraine’s “60-day truce” request to hold presidential elections, saying it can only halt strikes on election day.Russia has responded to Ukraine’s 60-day ceasefire to hold presidential elections with a proposal to suspend strikes only on the day of the vote. The row over Ukraine Elections is a sign of ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pushing for a more extended period of ceasefire in the current conflict to allow for safe and democratic elections.

Russia Proposes One-Day Ceasefire for Ukraine Elections

On October 12, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that President Vladimir Putin was ready to authorize a ceasefire in Russian strikes on election day, specifically. But Moscow refused to sign the wider Russia-Ukraine ceasefire plan. Ukrainska Pravda reported that Russia insisted on a longer halt so that the Ukrainian military could reorganize.

Zelenskyy Demands 60-Day Truce for Safe Voting

Zelenskyy has offered to observe a full 60-day ceasefire to prepare polling stations, to put in place security measures, and to organize national voting. In an interview with ABC News he stressed that the choice for Ukraine’s leadership must rest with the Ukrainian people. His proposal comes after criticism of his by U.S. President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.

Wartime Security Challenges Complicate Presidential Elections

Preserving the election process during a state of war is difficult and problematic both logistically and legally. Normal electoral procedures are suspended under martial law and citizens who were displaced and military personnel have trouble accessing polling stations. If there are sufficient security conditions, Zelenskyy has said he is prepared to cooperate with parliament on legislation changes, according to Ukrinform.

Peace Negotiations Face Renewed Diplomatic Uncertainty

The split makes it more difficult for ongoing peace talks in Ukraine, as both sides have different terms for suspending military efforts. Moscow said it was in favor of a permanent peace agreement, not a truce. In the meantime, Kyiv says that it is essential that attacks be endured throughout the period leading up to a meaningful election. There is no date or agreed ceasefire agreement set.
