indonesia removes 1.9 million

The Indonesian government in a bold step to improve the accuracy of the social welfare distribution cut off 1.9 million recipients of the third phase of 2025 Family Hope Program (PKH) and Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT). The change, which takes place later this July, is pursuant of a larger national initiative to ascertain that public assistance is applied to only those that are really in need.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has revealed that the move was informed by latest statistics of the National Socioeconomic Single Data (DTSEN). It will be a centralized system in which the eligibility of aid beneficiaries can be checked depending on economic status and other criteria. The government noted that there were fewer people involved in the recipients but the amount of aid money was the same.

Talking about the development, the Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf (popularly known as Gus Ipul) has added that this data overhaul was essential in correcting what he called the inclusion errors. Such mistakes had in the past enabled parties in higher economic deciles, that is Deciles 6 to 10, to go on collecting aid that is intended to be used by the poorer income groups.

The assistance will still be there but with the right hands this time, Gus Ipul added in a press briefing. This is not a thing of cutting aid, but a process of precision.

Reasons Behind the Massive Revision

The withdrawal of almost two million names is not just a housekeeping exercise of administrative nature, it highlights a structural change in the nature of the management of social protection in Indonesia. The government has cited the following as a handful of reasons behind the update:

  • Cutting out the abuse of money: It was seen that in some cases help money was supposedly misappropriated or received due to a false declaration.
  • Reduced priorities of better households: The new info excludes better-off households and assigns resources to the households that are more hit by poverty and inflation.
  • Promoting transparency: As people are becoming more and more critical of the aid program, governments are trying to make the process of distribution more transparent and data driven.

Who Is Still Eligible?

Although the government has not released a complete breakdown regarding the criteria, the Ministry again confirmed that only people in the lowest economic heights, specifically Deciles 1 to 5 will qualify. The revision also considers the following:

  • Family income levels
  • Employment status
  • Dependents in the household
  • Access to healthcare and education
  • Regional economic conditions

Anyone who thinks that they have been unfairly taken off the list can report using official complaint channels offered by the ministry.

Public Reaction and Policy Implications

The clean-up of the data has generated divided reactions on the social media. Although it is widely supported that the eligibility should be tightened, some people have raised concerns how it may cause some errors in the new list and how some needy families will be left behind.

The revision has been praised by social policy experts as the wise and urgent step to a targeted, and fiscally responsible welfare program. They however warn that the government should keep checking and updating data collection mechanisms to avoid mistakes and citizens revolt.

The political analysts consider this step to be a continuation of a general economic course shift of President Prabowo Subianto in the early period of his power, the focus on efficiency, data validation, and anti-fraud measures. This redistribution of aid with its budget limits and the pressure to reign in on the misuse of government money is set to become a model that others in government welfare may be forced to follow.

How to Check Your Aid Status

The citizens that will want to verify their eligibility to PKH or BPNT help any time in July 2025 can do it through:

The action is part of the overall effort of the government to digitalize its social protection system, and modernize the systems used in order to provide better protection to people living in the country, through the use of real-time data and technology.
